Config Menu

5.05  Local Configuration  (LC)

FUNCTION:  The Local Configuration menu allows you to set units, directional types, naming conventions, and reporting preferences.

Activate the Local Configuration routine by picking from the Config menu; by pressing [Alt][O], [L], or by typing the two-letter command LC at any data entry prompt.

CAUTION:  Several configuration menu settings are dependent upon settings from other menus.  For example, setting the directional units to Grads on the Local Configuration menu (LC - Section 5.05) will affect your options the CAD, Text Output, and Bearings Format menus.  However, you must remember to click [Apply] at the bottom of the menu before any changes you make are accepted.  Simply clicking on an item or changing a value does not change the setting unless you click [OK] or [Apply].  Clicking [Apply] will keep the configuration menu group open for multiple changes, while clicking [OK] will apply the changes and exit the menus.

Point Naming Conventions:  "Sight" Survey allows you to choose titles for your coordinates.  The choices you make here affect not only the reporting in the Text Output window, but also the prompting you see while using the program.  Several choices are available.  If you wish, you may even specify a custom title such as a foreign language word.  Choose the coordinate names from the drop-down option list, or select Other to enter a custom title.

Default Angle:  "Sight" Survey allows you to choose your default angle type.  Choose from: Azimuths; Angle Right; Deflect Right; Carlson; and None.  By setting a default angle type, "Sight" Survey will assume that any angular data NOT entered with a quad code is a default angle type (see Data Entry Basics - Directional Entries in Section 2.06).  For example, if your default type is Azimuths and your azimuth basis is North, an angle entry of 135.1040 would be assumed to be a North azimuth of 135° 10' 40".  You can override the default type by including a quad code, such as 17.3524SE, and the entry would be treated as a bearing of S17° 35' 24"E.

The Carlson option allows directional entries in the same manner as other Carlson software products.   In the Carlson option, the first number represents the quad code.  This format allows you to complete your angle entry entirely from the numeric keypad.  When using this option: 1 = NE; 2 = SE; 3 = SW; 4 = NW; 5 = Azimuth; 6 = angle left; 7 = angle right; 8 = deflect left; and 9 = deflect right.

If you want to enter quad codes for each entry, select a Default Angle of None.

Area Units:  Choose how you want your area reported, as: Square Feet; Square Feet & Acres; Square Meters; or Square Meters and Hectares.

NOTE:  If you change the Area Units, "Sight" Survey will check for consistency with Distance Units and Station Format.  You will be prompted to change any non-consistent settings.

Directional Units:  Choose your default directional unit as either Degrees or Grads (gons).  A grad is 1/400 of a circle.  When entering grads, bear in mind that the entry is a decimal value, whereas even though a degree entry is keyed in as a decimal entry, it still represents a d.mmss format.

Azimuth Basis:  Choose the basis for azimuth as either North or South.

Directional Type:  This setting governs how directional data is presented in your drawing and in the Text Output window.  Select either Bearings or Azimuths.  If you select Azimuths, the data is reported with respect to the Azimuth Basis, North or South.

Report Order:  this setting governs the column order in the Text Output window as well as the data entry order in "Sight" Survey's dialog boxes.  The setting Y, X, Z corresponds to the commonly used Northing, Easting, Elevation.  Dialog boxes will prompt for coordinates in the same order.  The X, Y, Z setting would yield columns of Easting, Northing, Elevation and result in dialog boxes prompting in an Easting, Northing order.

NOTE:  If you change the Report Order, a Page Heading indicating the new column titles will be automatically placed into your data printout in the Text Output window.  You may manually insert a page heading at any time by typing the two-letter command PH.

Distance Units:  Set "Sight" Survey's default distance units as: International Feet; US Survey Feet; or Meters.  This setting is used whenever you enter a distance using a constant factor.  For example, if you are working in International Feet and enter a distance of 80C (80 chains), "Sight" Survey converts the entered distance to International Feet. (80C = 5280 US Survey Feet = 5280.01056 International Feet.)  "Sight" Survey will report any change of distance units in the Text Output window.

NOTE:  If you change the Distance Units, "Sight" Survey will check for consistency with Area Units and Station Format.  You will be prompted to change any non-consistent settings.

Station Format:  Choose how you enter and report stationing from two formats; 0+00; and 0+000 (metric).

NOTE:  If you change the Station Format, "Sight" Survey will check for consistency with Area Units and Distance Units.  You will be prompted to change any non-consistent settings.

Report Labels:  Just as "Sight" Survey allows you to select or customize Point Naming Conventions, you may also customize Report Labels.  Several choices for each label are available.  If you wish, you may even specify a custom title such as a foreign language word.  Choose the label names from the drop-down option lists, or select Other to enter a custom title.

Varas:  The vara is a traditional unit of distance in Spanish and Portuguese speaking (or discovered)  countries.  The word vara means a stick or pole.  In the US, descriptions containing the vara may be found in Texas, Florida, Colorado, and California.  Further complicating matters is the fact that the length of a vara generally varies by region.  "Sight" Survey contains eight pre-defined values from which to choose, or you may select Custom and enter a value to use.  When entering a custom length, enter the value in inches.

Common vara definitions include: Texas (33 1/3"); Colorado (32.993"); California (33"); Florida (33.372"); Mexico (32.993") inches; southern South America (34"); Spanish (32.908"); Portuguese (43.3").
